In UK, several universities and small businesses have jointly produced the Phoenix, an inflatable high-altitude-pseudo-satellite (HAPS) aircraft that proceeds by porpoising through the inflation/compression and ejection of air in conjunction with an inflatable bag incorporated within the helium container in the envelope. Batteries are charged by solar cells fitted to the carbon-fibre wings, and the fuel cells to provide back-up power can be reversed to recharge the hydrogen onboard to replace the helium. Theoretically, the platform could stay aloft for an unlimited period.
