Vital aviation fuel quality standards updated by the EI

Air fuel quality standards that help ensure the safety of passengers on more than 100,000 flights globally every day have been revised and updated by the EI Aviation Committee and Joint Inspection Group (JIG).

The second edition of Quality assurance requirements for the manufacture, storage and distribution of aviation fuels to airports – or EI/JIG 1530 – provides a standard to assist in the maintenance of aviation fuel quality, from its point of manufacture to delivery to airports. It provides mandatory provisions and good practice recommendations for the design and functional requirements of facilities and operational procedures.

The new edition was launched at the IATA Aviation Fuel Forum in Athens in May and has been significantly updated. Notably, the standard has been made less jet fuel-specific with the inclusion of aviation gasoline.

EI Technical Director Martin Maeso MEI said: ‘Few uses of energy can claim to have had such a transformational impact on human development as air travel. But equally, nothing is more dependent on the most stringent of safety regimes.’

‘This guidance is stand out the most important piece of work undertaken by the Energy Institute in terms of its benefit to all air passengers.’

‘The unique value of the EI’s approach is that it brings industry together in a spirit of collaboration and fosters links between the sector and regulators.’
