EU to re-impose anti-subsidy duties on Argentine biofuels

European Union (EU) biofuels producers have welcomed the approval by the EU’s Trade Defence Committee of a European Commission (EC) proposal to re-impose definitive anti-subsidy duties against Argentine biodiesel imports, writes Keith Nuthall.

These duties had been up for review and in September 2018 the EC decided not to re-impose the duties on a provisional basis, raising concern among European producers that the EU might let them lapse. However, that will not now happen, with replacement definitive duties of between 25% and 33.4% possibly in place as early as March.

The EU has acted because Argentine taxes exports of biodiesel, which the EU considers distorts the market, ultimately creating subsidies for Argentinean producers.

The European Biodiesel Board (EBB) welcomed the move, saying the taxes were an ‘illegal subsidisation practice’. It was less happy that the EU committee also approved an import quota of 1.2mn tonnes of Argentine biodiesel, sold at a minimum price level.
