EU releases first data report on oil and gas sector safety
The first detailed European Commission report on European Union (EU) oil and gas industry safety has shown that 26.2% of significant offshore accidents involved the loss of control over wells, activating blowout diverters. There were 11 such incidents in 2016 – the year covered by the report – which was released in August 2018.
Also, there were 25 unintended releases of materials from EU offshore installations, mostly in the North Sea. Of these, 13 were unignited gas releases; seven unignited oil releases; and five releases of hazardous substances.
There were two incidents involving the loss of structural integrity of a rig, one of which required the evacuation of workers.
