Energy World May 2018

How will the UK government handle its post-Brexit responsibilities around nuclear power, particularly if it leaves Euratom as well as the EU? Our first article on nuclear matters addresses this question head on. It is followed by two more covering the potential role for small modular reactors in the UK; and the world’s first large-scale nuclear fusion facility – ITER – being built in southern France. In his viewpoint article on page 7, Tim Yeo also looks at nuclear policy divisions opening-up across Europe.

Moving on to all things energy storage, we have articles covering grid-scale projects around the world; the UK policy background and potential; and the potential benefits of hybridising lead-acid and lithium-ion battery technologies. Two more articles discuss the carbon-saving credentials of burning biomass – our author is not impressed; and the role of energy recovery within a waste strategy.

The issue also includes two articles from the EI – the third in our series from the EI's Young Professionals Networks, this time from Aberdeen, and the first of an occasional series of Energy in Conversation pieces, this time featuring the EI's Knowledge Engagement Manager Sarah George sitting down with Louise Kingham.
