Keeping the world on track to a maximum 1.5°C temperature rise on 1990 levels will require technologies to suck carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, as we wrote about extensively last November. Or will it? A recent report says that such techniques, some of which stray into the field of geoengineering, have ‘limited realistic potential’ to remove large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and should not be viewed as a silver bullet to solve climate change.
