A Gerini, Key to transport decarbonisation, Petroleum Review, November 2017, p 12

Natural gas is proposed as the optimal solution towards the reduction in both combustion emissions and noise. This is important since the transport sector is fast growing, and already accounting for 23% of global emissions. Overall analyses of natural gas usage are now focusing on maritime vessels (well-to-wake) and power generation (well-to-grid) as well as road vehicles (well-to-wheel, WtW). These show natural gas improvement in WtW car emissions of 23% compared to gasoline, and 7% to diesel. In heavy-duty applications, the benefits compared to diesel are 16% for CNG and 15% for LNG, whereas in the marine sector they are up to 21% compared to heavy fuel oil. Biomethane is already accepted in grid systems up to 16% in Germany, and 75% in Sweden, and it us estimated that waste sources in Europe are sufficient to fuel more than 2 mn vehicle
