Lighting up Makoko

Access to essential lighting has been provided to the community of Makoko, Lagos, Nigeria, an area with high levels of energy poverty, thanks to a partnership between the Energy Institute (EI) and Liter of Light Nigeria.

Liter of Light is a global grassroots movement which trains impoverished communities to use recycled plastic bottles and locally sourced materials to illuminate their homes, businesses and streets.

Graduates from the EI’s Royal Academy of Engineers-sponsored Graduate Engineering Training Scheme (GETS) trained 18 residents from Makoko to produce solar light bulbs and charging units for local residents throughout the month of August.

The project has brought tangible benefits to the community, enabling local business owners to extend their hours of operations and children to study after nightfall. The solar-powered lights will last for up to five years, helping to illuminate tents, public areas, streets and corners in the area.

Yewande Abiose, Managing Director of the EI Nigeria branch said:

‘EI Nigeria is proud to have been part of the team lighting up the Makoko community. The project has provided a platform to showcase the benefits of the GETS initiative. Participants have gained hands-on experience and at the same time provided affordable and sustainable light sources that will benefit the Makoko community for a long time to come.’

‘When the GETS programme was developed, community and national development was established as a core objective. This project with Liter of Light Nigeria helps us put action to our words.’

‘We look forward to further engagements with residents of the Makoko community in providing other environmentally friendly energy solutions.’
