Energy World October 2016

The Hinkley point C announcement came just before we sent this issue to press, but the story is covered in the editorial on the following page. Coincidentally, this issue contains a feature on nuclear matters, from page 26 onwards.

This starts with a piece describing the complex challenges being faced in Germany, Belgium and France as all three countries begin to reduce their nuclear power generating capacity. Then we look to the future of nuclear power in the UK – specifically at efforts being made by Britain’s Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre to ensure that UK-based companies are able to play a role whichever technology route is followed. A final piece addresses the potential advantages of molten salt reactors.

Crossing to the demand side, the other main feature this time around is energy use in buildings and homes, starting with an article on where Britain is up with policy on low and zero carbon homes. A second article discusses new minimum energy standards for privately rented property. Three more articles look at improving energy advice for householders; battery storage; and a unique, full-scale experimental house inside a laboratory in Salford.
