Energy responsibilities - Changes in UK Government following the election of Theresa May as Prime Minister on 13 July 2016

A new department, The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, has been set up – combining the responsibilities of the Department for Energy and Climate change (DECC) and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) 

The new Department will be run by the  Rt Hon Greg Clark MP following his appointment as the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Responsibilities (confirmed 8 August 2016) include:

  • developing and delivering a comprehensive industrial strategy and leading the government’s relationship with business
  • ensuring that the country has secure energy supplies that are reliable, affordable and clean
  • ensuring the UK remains at the leading edge of science, research and innovation
  • tackling climate change

Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Greg Clark, said:

"I am thrilled to have been appointed to lead this new department charged with delivering a comprehensive industrial strategy, leading government’s relationship with business, furthering our world-class science base, delivering affordable, clean energy and tackling climate change."  Statement
