Abstract

Digital developments are under the spotlight this month. Ashok Bilani, Executive VP of Technology at Schlumberger outlines his views on developing trends in this sector, ahead of his presentation at IP Week 2018, while BP’s Upstream CEO Bernard Looney explains how the company is harnessing the power of digital technology to monitor, predict and optimise operations.

Our online feature continues this theme, looking at how AI could have more impact on the oil and gas sector in the next five years than any technology (including the Internet) in the  last 25.

Many in the shipping sector believe the tanker markets are due an upturn. This month’s magazine looks at some of the crucial changes that will be required if that is to happen any time soon.

We also highlight the risk geomagnetic storms pose for power grids and communications infrastructure, and how shifting energy supply/demand dynamics and political will are spurring the growth of new trading hubs and pricing reforms. In addition, we look at how software can help manage risk and build trust in the oil and gas sector, while our regional review assesses challenges and opportunities in Australasia.

As yet another year draws to a close, it only remains for me to take this opportunity to thank our contributors and readers for their continued support of Petroleum Review.

Wishing you all New Season’s Greetings and a Happy New Year.
