Abstract

This month’s Petroleum Review looks at the changing prospects for North Sea development. At last, after some challenging years there are signs of optimism. The OGA highlights new initiatives to help the UK oil and gas industry succeed, like the small pools project and continuing reduction in operating costs.

In a detailed round-up, leading industry analysts consider that North Sea operations are now on a more stable footing. And consolidation continues with nearly $10bn of acquisition and divestment activity in the first six months of this year.

Meanwhile, as the world adjusts to persistently low oil prices, terminal operators report very high levels of capacity utilisation, which are attracting more investment to European ports. Overseas, the renaissance in North American oil and gas resources is having a marked impact on related pipeline and storage infrastructure.

We also look at the implications for the UK storage sector of Centrica’s decision to close the Rough gas storage facility. And Arup engineers argue the case for an innovative modular approach to LNG storage.

Analysis of the latest BP Statistical Review of World Energy highlights some of the key changes in the 2016 energy scene, at a time when energy demand was weak and prices remained low.

The aviation sector is set to embark on an unprecedented global carbon reduction initiative. We ask: what is involved and what are the chances of success given the public’s aversion to more expensive flights?

On the technology front, EI fuel experts provide guidance on critical filtration systems in the aviation fuel supply chain. The EI has also updated guidance for corrosion management in oil and gas production and processing.
